Reframing the debate between science and Christianity
The supposed “incompatibility” between evolution and Christianity is not an incompatibility between evolution and the Christian understanding of God. Rather, it arises from improper readings and uses of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.
If God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and eternal, then there is no inherent conflict between evolution and the Christian faith. What may need reframing is not the scientific theory of evolution itself, but the inappropriate use of the biblical text to advance political, social, or cultural agendas.
For too long, the evangelical mind has been held captive by fundamentalist, literalist, and often uneducated readings of Scripture.
Science is a gift from God. It is the most reliable, accurate, and impartial tool we have for discovering the truth about our universe. As Christians, our entire pursuit rests on the search for ultimate truth, which is found in Jesus Christ (John 14:6). Therefore, any endeavor that seeks to uncover truth about reality is, by extension, a Godly endeavor.
