The Historical Foundations of the Christian Faith

“Is it not…important to measure one’s own faith by the faith of the first witnesses or if need be to have it corrected from there?…Thus the insistence on the character of faith as [a] decision and the need to venture it [gives] rise to the danger of losing sight of the historical foundations when talking about faith…The result of this is that everything ends up being subjected to the kerygma, as if this had no connection with Jesus himself, and as if the question of our faith and how it accords with the message of Jesus and the first disciples was not to be discussed in that perspective, i.e. by looking at the relationship between the proclamation of the historical Jesus and the faith of the first witnesses.”
