Understanding the Biblical Text

The idea that you can understand the biblical text without also understanding the socio-historical context in which it was written is like saying you can do algebraic topology without first learning basic math. It’s about taking the time to study and understand as much as you can, not only what’s in the text itself but also about the circumstances in which it was produced. Claiming that you need some type of special revelation or “divine guidance” to understand it takes the text from the realm of rational discourse and assigns to it a magical element requiring some type of privileged key only available to the initiated. It’s about knowledge, not magic.
